Today we used bubbl.us to brainstorm everything we know about decimals. I wonder what new discoveries we will make over the coming weeks as we investigate decimals numbers. What questions do you have about decimals? What would you like to learn? What skills would you like to develop?
Over the last couple of weeks, we have been investigating different methods for solving multiplication problems. Our class has four favourites - the vertical method, solving from right to left; the vertical method, solving from left to right; the distributive method; and the new and popular lattice method!
Today some students from Grade 5/6P posed the question 'can we sove division problems using the lattice method?'
First, we came up with a division problem; then we experimented with a range of possible ways the lattice method COULD be used for solving the division problem. We didn't know if our answers were right or not, so we estimated what the answer SHOULD be, then we solved the problem using a known method (short division).
Once we knew what answer we NEEDED to get, we were able to work backwards and find out how the lattice method CAN be used.
Anthony and Ajay were the first ones to work out how it could be done. Here is their explanation… (created using 'Show Me' on Miss Power's iPad).
Hi! My name is Miss Power and I work with a bunch of awesome teachers and students in Melbourne, Australia.
