Congratulations to all the grade 5 students who, today, participated in our intraschool 24 tournament, run by Mrs Kurzman. After an exciting day of non-stop competition, we have our four finalists who will go on to represent our school in the Interschool 24 Tournament in Term 4. Congratulations to Jessica, Anthony, Talia and Anton! For a taste of the 24 Tournament, check out this iMovie trailer, created by Mikayla, Larissa, Matthew, Rose, Ryan and Celine.

This term, we are playing the game '24' at the start of every maths lesson. In the game, we have to use addition, subtraction, multiplication or division to create an equation using four digits that equals 24. We have been improving as the term goes on, and some people have been using some very useful strategies, which will help us when we participate in the Interschool 24 Tournament in September. What effective strategies do you use? Today we used bubbl.us to brainstorm everything we know about decimals. I wonder what new discoveries we will make over the coming weeks as we investigate decimals numbers. What questions do you have about decimals? What would you like to learn? What skills would you like to develop?
In term two, the grade 5/6 students at our school were inquiring into how science can help us understand and care for our world. As a home learning task, students were asked to create their own video of themselves conducting a science experiment.
Aretha decided to make ice cream! Her video is not only very entertaining, but very interesting! When I watched it, I had no idea that ice cream could be made like this! Thank you, Aretha, for sharing your clever science experiment with us all! I wonder what other interesting scientific discoveries were made through other scientific experiments? Here is yet another amazing science experiment, presented by Kanani! Until watching Kanani's video, I had no idea that washing detergent could have such an effect on milk. Check out her video below. Can anyone else shed some light on WHY this happens? It's very interesting... Well done Kanani and thank you for sharing your awesome video with us! Today, we read a passage from Matthew's Gospel (Chapter 6: 9-13 to be exact), in which Jesus teaches us how to pray. The prayer He teaches us in this passage is the Our Father. Some of the words and phrases in the Bible are a bit tricky for us to understand, so we spent a bit of time discussing what they MIGHT mean. By looking at the words within the WHOLE sentence, we were able to build up a list of possible synonyms for those tricky words. We then re-wrote the prayer in our own words. We think it makes a bit more sense, and now when we pray the Our Father using our own words, we know what we're asking of God when we say this very special prayer. What do you think? Does it make sense to you too? We hope you like it
In 5/6P, we have a display of lots of different computer shortcuts (like CTRL-C for Copy). If you click on the link, you can check them out! Do you know any more? If you do, let us know, so we can add them to our class display!
Our Favourite Computer Shortcuts Over the last couple of weeks, we have been investigating different methods for solving multiplication problems. Our class has four favourites - the vertical method, solving from right to left; the vertical method, solving from left to right; the distributive method; and the new and popular lattice method! Today some students from Grade 5/6P posed the question 'can we sove division problems using the lattice method?' First, we came up with a division problem; then we experimented with a range of possible ways the lattice method COULD be used for solving the division problem. We didn't know if our answers were right or not, so we estimated what the answer SHOULD be, then we solved the problem using a known method (short division). Once we knew what answer we NEEDED to get, we were able to work backwards and find out how the lattice method CAN be used. Anthony and Ajay were the first ones to work out how it could be done. Here is their explanation… (created using 'Show Me' on Miss Power's iPad). |
